May 2025 Amarillo City Council Endorsements
The Amarillo Police Officers Association was established in 1980 and represents 324 working Amarillo Police Officers, which is 95% of the sworn officers in the department. Our mission is to enhance the lives of our members and our city through benevolent and civic engagement.
APOA membership has voted to endorse Cole Stanley for Mayor, Tim Reid for Place 1, Don Tipps for Place 2, Tom Scherlen for Place 3, and Les Simpson for Place 4. The current city council, including out-going Place 1 council member Josh Craft, listened to the citizens of Amarillo, who demanded that city government be different. They put needs before wants and prioritized what mattered most. The council completely overhauled the city budget, which was a monumental task. They were repeatedly told that there was no more money to fund basic needs. But this group poured themselves into their volunteer jobs more than anyone ever had before. The result – a restructured city budget that addressed long-standing shortfalls with money to spare.
The APOA told city leadership about the growing crisis of shrinking police applicant pools for many years. Those concerns were pushed down the road, which created a severe shortage of officers. This council did not ignore those concerns. They directed city leaders to work towards a solution. That resulted in a historic agreement that has made Amarillo a competitive market for young people pursuing a law enforcement career. Applications have almost doubled since that agreement. The crime rate continues to drop in Amarillo, in part, due to the efforts of the current council to support the police department and its officers. The APOA believes that Tim Reid will be a valuable addition to these strong leaders. His record of service to our country and our community speaks for itself. After a distinguished career that took him all over the country with the FBI, he chose to settle in Amarillo because of his love for the people here. He serves as the director of the Panhandle War Memorial, where his work with our local veterans is well-known. The APOA believes Tim’s investigative skills will translate to him looking at all sides of an issue and making informed decisions that are best for all of Amarillo. Please join us in supporting these candidates to continue real, honest leadership that represent EVERYONE in Amarillo.
