In 1980 the Amarillo Police Officers Association was formed. All members must be full-time sworn officers of the Amarillo Police Department. The association was formed to give officers a voice on issues that effect them, and to work with local government. Members have changed the Police Departments policy over the years, by working with city leaders for effective changes.
The APOA has endorsed candidates for public office and lead elections for pay equality for police and fire.
The APOA was able to complete the first ever Meet and Confer Contract with the city in September 2017. This contract redesigned the pay scale and the promotion process in the department.
The APOA is part of the state organization known as The Combined Law Enforcement Associations of Texas, CLEAT. CLEAT is part of the National Association of Police Organizations, NAPO. Our members belong to CLEAT and NAPO which gives us a voice on the state and national level.
